Mary J. Gray
Winter Park, FL Email:
After Mary J. received her BA in painting from University of Central Florida, she purchased a two story house in the ‘Thornton Park’ area of Orlando, FL. She organized and co founded “Women in Art, Inc.” This house provided both studios and gallery space for artists. She participated and exhibited with this group from 1979–1984 until family, business, and travel with her husband, while raising two children, redirected her from painting for a few years. Mary J. continued to stay involved in art through photographing, sketching, taking occasional workshops and visiting European art museums.
She returned to painting in 1997 chasing the blue shadows of Key West, FL painting in plein air. By 2001 she discovered a group of plein air artists who also enjoyed the great outdoors while regularly painting natures’ ever changing landscape. She now considers herself a re-emerging artist.
Since 2002, Mary J. has been Director of Central Florida Plein Air Artists (CFPAA); organizing and participating in many plein air paint outs and exhibitions in the Central Florida and the East Coast areas. She recently helped establish a website for all the artists of CFPAA www.CFPAArtists.org
Mary J. studied painting with Daniel Green in NY, Albert Handel in FL, Morgan Samuel Price in FL and photography at the Arrowmont School in TN. She has applied her talents painting murals, portraits, still-life, and landscapes. She also taught art in both public and private art schools. Her painting of the Jack Kerouac House, done recently during the College Park Historical Tour of Homes, was picked for permanent collection by CPNA.
Mary J. enjoys painting from life. She says, “The whole process is energizing. Whether the subject matter is a still life, a live model, or a landscape, all senses are brought into play and I am totally immersed in capturing the timeless and immediate nature of the subject before me.” She is a very active artist and organizer. She has participated in numerous exhibitions, including juried group and one person shows. Her studio is now at her home in Winter Park, FL. Mary J. would love to hear from you! Please feel free to contact Mary J. by email.
